Phetchaburi’s most well-known landmark, the locally known as Khao Wang (Palace Hill), is located on the three peaks of 95-meter high verdant hill, in the city. It was built under the royal command of King Rama IV to become his summer palace that finished in 1860. The whole compound is comprised of royal halls, palaces, temples and other buildings which were elegantly constructed in a well-balanced of Thai, neoclassical Western and Chinese architectural styles.
Of all the caves in Phetchaburi province, Khao Luang is the most important and best visited, because of the large number of Buddha images found inside the cave, including a meters high Buddha image cast by order of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V).The impressive caves are set in Khao Luang hill which is almost 100 meters high, just North of Phetchaburi town. They consist of a number of caverns filled with beautifully illuminated golden Buddha images, several chedis and a great number of stalactites hanging from the ceiling. King Mongkut (Rama IV) who reigned the Kingdom from 1851 until 1868 used the cave to study Buddhism and to meditate. He had a large number of Buddha images placed in the Khao Luang cave.
The five prangs at the center of the Wat Mahathat is a large courtyard enclosed by a cloister. At the center of the courtyard stand five massive prangs, known as “ Phra Prang Ha Yod”, or five peak prang. The Khmer/Lopburi style towers were constructed during the Sukhothai era.
